Kalvária (The Calvary)
At the foot of the Šturec mountain, on the slope leading to the town of Kremnica lies a cross rut which ends by the church of St. Cross. The calvary together with the castle complex forms the major attraction of this scenic town. The temples of the cross rut together with the church provides a scenic backdrop for the historic town of Kremnica. The cross rut was built to protect the territory - a territory for the mining of minerals in the Kremnica's surrounding regions. The first historic account about calvary's existence was in the chronicle records of the Franciscans. The records described the beginning of the building of the church of St. Cross in 1729. There was also an account of the 6th church in town built on a famous hill known as "Drill Field" -now called Kalvária. The construction was finished in 1734. A commemoration card was taken from the church and stored at the Warehouse of Museum of Coins and Medals in Kremnica. The church was the last part of the cross road. The first cross road had 7 chapels (each of them representing 2 stations). This historical account was confirmed by a mining map from 1741. In the19th century further chapels were gradually built - a total number of 12 was built.
